How the price is worked out
Jewellers in Nepal price gold jewellery in four steps. Jarti is added to the net weight, that weight is multiplied by the day's gold rate, the jyala is added, and a luxury tax of 2% goes on top.
Over 1 tola only. This method is used for pieces weighing more than 1 tola (11.66 g). Lighter pieces are priced differently, so ask us for a quote.
- Step 1Net weight + jartias a % or in grams or tola
- Step 2× rate per gramrate per tola ÷ 11.6638
- Step 3+ jyalamaking charge in rupees
- Step 4+ 2% luxury taxon the gold value and jyala
- ResultFinal pricestones are priced separately
Example: a 20 g chain with 10% jarti is charged as 22.00 g. At NPR 2,90,700 per tola (NPR 24,923 per gram) the gold value is NPR 5,48,312. With NPR 1,500 jyala and 2% luxury tax (NPR 10,996), the final price is NPR 5,60,808.
What each part means
- Net weight
- The weight of the gold alone. Stones, beads and fillings are weighed and priced separately.
- Jarti जर्ती
- The wastage charge for gold lost while the piece is cut, filed and polished. Added to every piece, as a percentage of the net weight or as a weight in grams or tola.
- Rate दर
- The day's gold rate per tola, based on the FENEGOSIDA rate. Divide by 11.6638 for the rate per gram. Our Pokhara rate is updated every day.
- Jyala ज्याला
- The making charge for the craftsmanship, in rupees. It depends on the design: a plain chain costs far less to make than a filigree bridal set.
- Luxury tax विलासिता शुल्क
- Usually 2%, charged on the gold value plus the jyala.

Questions and answers
How do I calculate the price of gold jewellery in Nepal?
For pieces over 1 tola: final price = ((net weight + jarti) × rate + jyala) + luxury tax. For example, 20 g with 10% jarti at NPR 2,90,700 per tola, with NPR 1,500 jyala and 2% luxury tax, comes to about NPR 5,60,808.
Does this method work for small pieces?
No. It is used for pieces weighing more than 1 tola (11.66 g). Lighter pieces such as small earrings, nose pins and rings are priced differently, so ask us for a quote.
How many grams are in one tola?
One tola is 11.6638 grams. To turn a rate per tola into a rate per gram, divide it by 11.6638.
Is jarti charged on every piece?
Yes. Jewellers add jarti to every piece for the gold lost while it is made, either as a percentage of the net weight or as a weight in grams or tola.
What is the luxury tax on gold jewellery?
A luxury tax, usually 2%, is charged on the gold value plus the jyala. Check that it is shown on your bill.
